Passion, Drive and the “It-Factor”

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

I had the pleasure of attending another ASID/IIDA Wisconsin Interior Design Student Career Day this past Friday at American Family Insurance. The committee created a great schedule of presentations and activities to inspire students and prepare them for their professional careers.

Aga Artka and I teamed up for a presentation titled “Who Are You?” We gave students a structure for developing an “elevator speech” and tried to get them to think “out-of-the-box” in terms of what they can offer a future employer. Every designer needs to understand they bring more to the table than a design degree and design-related experience. It is their other unique skills and characteristics that will set them apart from the competition. And if you have a few minutes with a new contact, how are you going to communicate that? What can you say to someone that will make a good first impression and leave a lasting impression?

Be Inspired - Meet Carlie Nesgoda

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

After numerous emails and polite persistence, I was finally able to connect with Carlie Nesgoda last week. Carlie was interested in learning more about my business and how to use her design and architecture studies to pursue her passion. I always enjoy connecting with driven students, so we met for lunch and a chat. It didn’t take long for me to be impressed and inspired by this emerging professional.

Carlie is passionate about an idea, a project, and helping her hometown thrive and grow…it seems to me she hopes to help make our world a better place one little corner at a time. I invited her to share her thoughts here as a guest blogger for as long as she wants to stay and share.

If you want to see what a future leader is thinking about today, read on…

Back in the Classroom at UW-Stevens Point

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Aga Artka and I headed to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (my alma mater) today to continue our classroom tour. It was good to be back “home.” I enjoyed every minute of my Pointer education and hope we we were able to inspire some soon to be graduates.

Kudos to Amy Bourassa, Kaitlin Wolfe, Ella Frances Horner, and Ashley Hanseter for already reaching out to me via LinkedIn. Good luck building your network!

Do You Have What it Takes to Succeed?

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Aga Artka and I are on the school circuit sharing our experiences and motivating interior design students to take charge of their careers. A design degree provides a great foundation for professional success.

Embrace the knowledge you are gaining in the classroom, be proud of your past experiences, recognize your strengths, let your passions guide you, and grab hold of your future.

Your Career. Your Future.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011
I had the pleasure of teaming up with interior designer Aga Artka to talk to design students at Milwaukee Area Technical College about embracing the future.
While I enjoyed sharing my career path and insights with the students, I was proud to share the stage with Aga. It was in that very classroom where I was once a teacher and she was a bright and motivated student. Now she is an entrepreneur and talented design professional who I learn from on a daily basis.
Together we teach, learn, and grow. We hope you find a few pearls of wisdom in our presentation, and we look forward to hearing from and helping many other students and professionals.

‘Growing Your Business’ with The Retail Doctor

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

When the nation is in an economic crisis and the unemployment line grows longer day by day, it is easy to blame the world for our problems–let’s be honest–the world is full of problems, economic and otherwise. However, day after day newspapers and magazines share little rays of hope–the success stories of those who have overcome the state of the economy and the unemployment line. While each person has different challenges to overcome and a unique way of rising to these challenges, they all have one thing in common - they are committed to succeeding and embracing change to create a better future for themselves. In The Retail Doctor’s Guide To Growing Your Business, Bob Phibbs (The Retail Doctor) says, “You can’t use external circumstances like the economy as an excuse to not change - You are the one thing that can have maximum effectiveness - The only thing standing in the way of succeeding is you.” (more…)

Metropolis Magazine’s Next Generation 2010 Call For Entries

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

For the past five years, I have traveled to New York City for ICFF - The International Contemporary Furniture Fair. One of the highlights of this show, in my opinion, is the Metropolis Conference. It is a day of enlightenment - a truly inspiring experience. Part of the inspiration comes from listening to the creative design solutions provided by Metropolis’ Next Generation award winners.
